Walking through Hancock, you might assume that the local trails are steep and challenging — the town is essentially built on one big hill, after all. In reality, the opposite is true; the best spots for hiking near Hancock, MI, are surprisingly gentle. While you’ll find a few paths that will get your heart rate up (see #5 below), most of the local hiking trails are mostly flat and easy on the knees.

1. Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids

The massive Maasto Hiihto and Churning Rapids trail network offers about 15.5 miles of of backcountry trails just outside Hancock. You’re welcome to hike, run, bike, snowshoe, or cross-country ski — the trails are open all year and groomed in the winter. With three trailheads, it’s easy to access the network from in town or out on the Portage Canal. Dogs are welcome; just make sure they’re in your control. Afterward, cool off at Hancock Beach.

2. Paavola Wetlands Nature Area

Stroll through the silent forest at Paavola Wetlands Nature Area. With its easy, flat trails, it’s the perfect spot for a family hike or nature expedition — the main path can even accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. Make sure to check out the beaver pond and the historic farmhouse, which has been on the site since the 1800s.

Dogs are allowed (on a leash), and the main hiking trail is just 0.25 miles long. If you want a longer walk, explore the rustic trails that wrap around the pond.

3. Bear Lake Trail

Hike through towering pine trees on the Bear Lake Trail, which is located about 10 miles from Hancock. This beautiful 1-mile trail is easy and peaceful, so it’s makes a great family hike or after-dinner stroll. We love it for trail running — it’s almost always empty, and the trees are beautiful all year.

4. McLain State Park

The hiking trails at McLain State Park might not be very long, but you should allow plenty of time. You’ll need it — around every corner, there’s another stunning view of Lake Superior. The paths, which are soft and covered with pine needles, travel up and down small hills in an open, airy pine forest. If you get too warm, pop out to the beach and hop right in!

5. Hungarian Falls

Just 9 miles from Hancock, the spectacular Hungarian Falls area features three spectacular waterfalls and about 2 miles of hilly hiking trails. Our favorite route starts at the lower parking area, travels across the Dover Creek Bridge, runs up the far side of the creek on to a secret hidden falls, and returns downhill past the main viewing areas. If you prefer a shorter (and easier) hike, take the flat 0.25-mile path from the upper parking area.

8. Steve Farm Nature Area at Lovell Creek

The Steve Farm Nature Area is one of our favorite places for hiking near Hancock, MI. This protected area is completely under the radar — ask a local, and they’ll probably have no idea where it is. The hike isn’t hard, but it’s an absolutely lovely trek through birch trees, past a beaver dam, and through lush ferns.

7. Din Egen Woods

Din Egen Woods is another hiking/multiuse area near Hancock that doesn’t get many visitors. It’s a little off the beaten path, just a few miles from Steve Farm and Sandy Bottom. The trail is less than one-half mile, but it’s a pleasant stroll through the trees. Keep an eye out for the little cabin, which blends beautifully into the forest.
