Silver River Falls is one of the most unique waterfalls in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. The top of the falls flows over a series of conglomerate inclines before bumping into a 15-foot conglomerate cliff.

Walk a short distance downstream, and you’ll see evidence of the area’s wild geologic past — the lower falls drop over a layer of volcanic rock that was formed more than 1 billion years ago. If you look closely, you can see the color shift from the reddish conglomerate conglomerate to the dark basaltic rocks.

Until spring 2023, the Silver River ran under a historic arched stone bridge upstream from the waterfall. The bridge’s retaining wall failed on April 22, 2023, and the entire structure has been replaced as of July 2023. Expect one-lane traffic until testing is complete.
