At Manganese Falls, French Annie Creek runs through a narrow rock gorge. Though it’s located just off a paved road, this waterfall is elusive — the view is often blocked by thick trees and tall, steep rock walls. If you’re willing to do a bit of hiking, however, you can find gorgeous views of each section of the falls.

Where to See the Best Views of Manganese Falls

View from the top of Manganese Falls

Manganese Falls is one of the more challenging Keweenaw waterfalls to see. From the top, the trees obscure the view; at the bottom, a bend in the creek hides the upper falls.

If you don’t feel like hiking, you can still get a decent view. As you’re facing the Manganese Falls sign, walk up the road to the right. Climb down to the creek right where it runs next to the road, and hop across the rocks to get to the opposite side. Walk a little way downstream; you’ll be able to see the top of the waterfall cascade over a cliff and disappear into a narrow canyon.

Feeling Energetic? Do This Hike Instead

For a better view, take the trail that’s directly below the Manganese Falls sign. It travels down to a viewpoint, but you’ll only get a glimpse of the falls through the trees. (See the end of the video above.)

Keep following the trail down; along the way, there are plenty of little viewpoints, each with a different perspective. Eventually, the trail gets steep and jagged — expect to lower yourself down one or two miniature drop-offs. It’s a little challenging, but for reference, my (very active) 65-year-old mom made it just fine. If you struggle with mobility or balance, this probably isn’t the right route.

Eventually, you’ll come to a little footbridge across the creek. Cross over the bridge and walk down to the water. From here, walk upstream to see the different parts of the canyon. It’s lovely, and extremely buggy in the summer; bring insect repellent.

When you can’t go any further along the creek, climb up the banks until you find the trail. Continue up the hill; the best views of Manganese Falls are on this section. This path continues until you get back to the road.
